Desktop Virtualization Example:

• The high school started offering laptops to each HS student – 800 in all.
• Old Method – A standard image is created and 800 laptops are provisioned through the use of hard drive replication software such as Ghost.  Each time a modification to the image is made, the update or fix doesn’t get to the affected laptops until they are brought in and a tech re-images the laptop.  Very disruptive and labor intensive!
• Virtualized Desktop Method – A desktop pool is created in Vmware View for students that includes all necessary apps.  Students use their personal laptops, or are assigned a school provided laptop with only a simple OS (no apps).  VMware View client is installed on the student laptops the first time they go to a specified URL.  Students log into the virtualized desktop environment with the VMware View Client and immediately access their assigned virtual desktop.  Each time a modification to the student desktop (pool) is made, students automatically get the change the next time they log in.  No student disruption and support labor needs drop dramatically.
